Transportation and Economic Development in Livingston County
Presented by the Livingston County Transportation Coalition
Tuesday, June 13, 2017 3:00 – 4:15 PM
Board Room – Livingston County Mental Health Building
622 E. Grand River Ave., Howell, MI
Good transportation systems provide many services and stimulate economic development:
Increases the pool of workers
Gets customers to businesses that sell goods or provide services
Enhances vitality and livability of communities
Attracts young professionals who value public transportation
Reduces traffic congestion
National studies show that good public transportation is a wise investment:
Every dollar invested generates an average of $8 in local economic investments
Every dollar invested yields $30 in increased business sales
Creates many jobs and attracts highly skilled workers
Property values increase in areas served by good transit
The best impacts result from comprehensive planning to link transportation development with economic and community development based on broad public input as well as technical and feasibility studies. These and other issues will be explored by two economic development leaders:
Scott Griffith, realtor and past chair of Livingston Economic Development Council, will provide a local perspective on economic development and transportation in Livingston County.
Sue Mosey, Executive Director of Midtown Detroit Inc., will describe some examples of effective transit oriented development in Detroit, drawing out effective processes and lessons learned.
A discussion of the impact of current transportation services and transportation options in and around Livingston County will follow.
Business leaders, economic development and community planners, developers, chambers of commerce, development authorities and other interested parties are invited to attend.
Participants should come prepared to explore the following questions:
How has the lack of public transportation curtailed economic development?
What are our county’s most urgent transportation needs for economic development?
What transportation options are businesses most interested in supporting?
