Cleary names Elyse Schlump as new women’s basketball coach

(HOWELL, MI) Elyse Schlump, former Ann Arbor Concordia University women’s basketball coach, joins Cleary University as its new women’s basketball coach.

“We are thrilled to welcome Elyse as our new head coach,” announces Max Ballinger, director of Athletics for Cleary. “Her passion for developing student athletes, combined with her years of experience and proven success, make her an incredible fit for Cleary. Elyse’s energy, leadership and dedication to her players are exactly what we were looking for.”

Schlump was head coach at Concordia for three seasons, capturing a 51-37 record, and a 42-20 record in the WHAC. The Concordia Cardinals made it to the WHAC semifinals in the 2023-24 season, and the quarterfinals in the other seasons. Under her leadership, she coached five student athletes who were named First Team All WHAC, two student athletes who were named Second Team All WHAC, and three student athletes who were named to the WHAC All Freshmen Team. Before becoming head coach, she played basketball for Concordia for four seasons as an undergraduate student, and the next two years she served as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team.

Her first coaching position was at NCAA D3 Skidmore College in New York where she was an associate head coach for five years. She then accepted a position as Director of Basketball Operations at NCAA Division 1 Marist University in New York for four years before rejoining Concordia for the past two years as its head coach.

"I’m incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead such a talented group of young women both on and off the court,” Schlump says about her new position as head coach at Cleary. “I look forward to being part of the Cleary community and working together to continue elevating the women’s basketball program.”

Schlump replaces Kevin Mondro, who was hired in the fall of 2022 as the first women’s basketball coach at Cleary. Prior to that season, Cleary did not have a men’s or women’s basketball team. The teams began competitive play during the 2023 – 2024 season. Mondro accepted a position as an assistant coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, an NCAA Division I school and his alma mater.
